Max4Live opens up a ton of possibilities not only for simplicity (because you can just design an effect or synth and then use it like a plug-in) but also in high-level control of your DAW itself. It also allows you to control ableton itself - you can change the global tempo, automate clip selection, reroute audio on separate channels - all of this can be done according to input from your webcam or according to a markov chain or whatever. However, you can also use it to control other plugins in ableton and bring things like algorithmic sequencers into the fray.

You can create a patch and then you can ignore its midi handeling or sequencing it because it will behave like a vst and take this in from Ableton's clips. That's its main purpose and that's really powerful in itself. Primarily, Max for Live lets you build and develop your own plug-ins and instruments and use them as if they were VSTs. I pretty much use only those and loops I put together myself.

If you are hardcore into video and write your own shaders and stuff then you can also also look into buying the GEN extension which lets you work with much lower level code inside Max.Д®DIT: There is a library of AWESOME, free osx jitter externals that I can't remember the name of right now. I honestly don't know tons about Jitter as I never got very heavily into it so I can't comment too much on how video mixing works, just that I know it is definitely possible. Standalone Max comes with a bunch of modular video effects, but I tend not to like them because they reduce the framerate and resolution by a bunch - something you don't actually have to do, just that they did so you can load 50 of the effects on a mediocre laptop with ease. The mixing thing you are talking about is easily achievable as are far more advanced things. You can also fire messages to these objects to make them automatically rename themselves. Matrices all have names and so you don't actually have to connect them by cables as you can make two with the same name and they share the same data. Jitter treats all video as a 'matrix' which is actually just an arbritrary n-dimensional grid of data (rgba video is 6 dimensions: x/y/r/g/b/a). I know that they chose to limit the Jitter capabilites in Max for Live to get people to still buy the standalone. It's more that if you own Max for Live but not standalone Max then you can't code and see the changes straight away. You can use the bpatcher object to automatically load in different patches and you could use clips in ableton to fire messages to the video master patch to load the desired clip/loop/patch How I'd likely go about it: dedicated video channel in ableton that has automated clip/effect/whatever loading. I'm a long time max user and that whole combo of Ableton/Push/Max/Jitter just seems awesome. I have been gear lusting after one for ages. I heard there is awesome max for live integration with the push controller too! Apparently you can forward text to the LED screen on the controller.

You could definitely get incredibly tight integration though! It's also possible to pump OSC (and maybe midi?) into quartz composer but if you are going the ableton route then Max makes the most sense. I know it doesn't let you 'live patch' - you have to lock the editor to see the video instead of being able to see changes as you make them. If you don't own the standalone version of Max there are some limitations on what jitter can do in Max for Live.
